Monterey Bay - Cool Waters & Warm Hearts

(July, 2009)

As on all my (not so many) business trips I always look out for a chance to take a dip in the nearest pond or ocean with my scuba gear. It is after all a passion  of note, and besides, I have never once regretted taking my gear along just in case I get a chance to blow a few bubbles.

And so it was with my last trip to the USA where I was fortunate enough to attend the OSCON 2009 convention. You can read more about this event in my article which you will find here. Thus I had an entire Sunday to myself before the business part of my trip started and I intended to make full use of my chance.

I visited Monterey for the first time in 1994. I was on my way to a town somewhere southeast of there, I forget the name. I had just flown in form Taiwan, and I was really bushed. When I drove out of SFO the rain was bucketing down, and it just got worse and worse. I could hardly see the bonnet of the car.

It was getting dark, and there were plenty of accidents on the highways. I took a wrong turn and didn't discover it until an hour later.

By now I was in a coma. I saw the signs for Monterey and decided to call it a night. I drove into town and checked into a motel. The room looked as though there had been a seven-day orgy in it. The bed was not made, there were empty booze bottles, and so on. I didn't care.

The next day I awoke to more rain. The motel management told me that the entire region was flooded, and some people had drowned when the bridge they were driving over collapsed. I was not going anywhere.

I had a good time. I met some really nice people, and saw all the sights like the aquarium and Cannery Row, where John Steinbeck lived.

Thanks for reminding me of that...

Hi there Piet,

Ag, thanks sooo much for the lovely comment. It's great to know that it helped take you on a little trip of your own down memory lane, although I am not sure it's the sort of trip you wanted to have more than once ;-)

In any event as you can see, once the skies clear the place is quite beautiful, and I certainly had a good time. I must admit though I felt the weather in this entire region interesting enough to comment on it in one of my other blogs as well, so I am not too surprised you had such adventure in this area.

Perhaps one day you can see it again under more pleasant circumstances.

All the best!
